Prayer to Yield to the Holy Spirit

1:05 min prayer

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, but are you listening to Him? A prayer for yielding, trusting, and letting God order your steps. Watch and pray along.

People often ask, how will I know God is speaking to me? A big part of the answer is learning to yield to the Holy Spirit. So this is a prayer to be led by the Spirit, recognizing that God's Spirit lives in you and is always at work, and choosing to follow His lead. The Spirit is already guiding every believer. Yielding simply means saying yes to Him, staying in His Word, and letting Him line your thoughts up with His. Pray this when you want to be more sensitive to God's leading and more confident that He's directing your steps.

A Word Before You Pray

Here's a freeing truth to carry into this prayer. If you belong to Christ, the Holy Spirit already lives in you and is already leading you. Romans 8:14 calls that a present fact, not a rare event you have to unlock. So the question isn't really whether God is leading. It's whether you're yielding.

That's what this prayer is about, surrender. It's choosing to lay down your own agenda and follow the Spirit's lead. And the surest way to recognize that lead is the Word, because the Spirit who lives in you is the same Spirit who inspired the Bible, and He will never lead you against it. That's your test for anything you sense. If it lines up with Scripture and God's character, follow it. If it doesn't, it isn't Him.

One more thing about the line where you commit your plans to God. That isn't a guarantee that everything you want will succeed. It's something better. You're handing Him your plans and asking Him to reshape your wants until they match His will, so that what you end up pursuing is what He wanted all along. That's the kind of plan He loves to establish.

The Prayer

Hey family. People often ask the question, how will I know God is speaking to me? Well, the key is to yield to the Holy Spirit. The Bible says the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Let's pray. Lord, I realize as a believer, my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. I recognize your presence on a daily basis. My faith in you is effective. I believe that you, heavenly father, are leading and guiding me by the Holy Spirit through my spirit and illuminating my mind. As I yield to the Holy Spirit, I believe that my steps are ordered of you, Lord. I commit and trust myself wholly to your guidance, expecting you to cause my thoughts to become agreeable to your will. And so shall my plans be established and succeed. in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

How to Use This Prayer

Pray it as a daily yielding, not a one-time event. Since the Spirit is always leading, this prayer is really about keeping your own heart soft and responsive. Pray it in the morning and mean it, then go through the day actually listening.

The main place to tune your ear is the Word, so pair this prayer with time in Scripture. That's the Spirit's primary channel, and it's also your safeguard, anything you sense that contradicts God's Word or character isn't from Him, so test it there. Obey the things He's already made clear, and the next step usually comes into focus. When you feel a prompting toward what's good, loving, and Christlike, lean into it. Pair this with Romans 8:14 or Proverbs 3:5-6, and don't measure His leading by how much you feel. Measure it by whether you're yielding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I yield to the Holy Spirit and let Him lead me?

Less by striving and more by surrendering. The Spirit already lives in every believer and is always leading, so yielding is mostly your response to Him. Stay in the Word, since that is His main channel, obey what He has already shown you, and lay down your own agenda. Then keep saying yes to the next thing He shows you.

Does committing my plans to God guarantee they'll succeed?

No, not the way we often hope. Proverbs 16:3 is wisdom, not a blank check, and following God is never a promise of guaranteed earthly success. What it means is that when you entrust your work to God, He aligns your desires with His will, and the plans that fit His will are the ones He establishes.

What does it mean to be led by the Spirit?

It comes from Romans 8:14, that those led by the Spirit are children of God. The leading is constant, not a rare event, and it points mostly toward becoming like Jesus, not just toward decisions. The Spirit does it chiefly through the Word. Being led is His work in you. Yielding to it is your part.

Why don't I feel the Spirit leading me?

Often His leading is quieter than we expect. We wait for a dramatic feeling, but the Spirit usually works steadily, through Scripture and a settled inner sense more than goosebumps. Romans 8:14 calls His leading a fact, not a feeling. So ask whether you are in the Word and yielding, and trust He leads even when you don't feel it.

How to Hear God

How to Hear God: He Still Speaks is a blueprint for assisting people who want to get in tune with the voice of God. God has not changed and wants to communicate with us as He did with Adam in the garden of Eden. The direction our lives have taken is a direct result of the voices we have chosen to follow. It would make sense to follow the voice of God who knows the best plan and directions for our journey on earth. The question is simply, If God had some information that could change your life for the better, would you want it? If God had answers to questions, you needed answered, would you want it. Well, guess what He does! The real question for all of us, is have we taken the time to build the requisite relationship that fosters the answers to our questions. This book will be a great tool in building a more meaningful relationship with God. We were created with two ears and one mouth, so we should spend more time listening than talking.
