Why Prayer Matters for Intercession

Intercessory Prayers: Partner with God for Others' Breakthrough

Intercessory prayer is standing between God and those who need His intervention - praying on behalf of others for salvation, healing, deliverance, and transformation. These prayers equip you to become an effective intercessor, partnering with God to see lives changed and souls saved.

What Is Intercession?

Biblical intercession means standing in the gap for others, pleading their case before God, and contending in prayer for their breakthrough. An intercessor is someone who:

  • Prays for others rather than just for themselves
  • Stands in the gap between God and those in need
  • Engages in spiritual warfare on behalf of others
  • Persists in prayer even when answers seem delayed
  • Partners with God's heart for people's salvation and transformation

The Bible is filled with intercessors - Abraham interceding for Sodom, Moses standing in the gap for Israel, Jesus praying for His disciples, and Paul constantly interceding for the churches. God is still looking for intercessors today who will stand in the gap for this generation.

Why Intercession Matters

Your intercessory prayers create spiritual openings for God to work in people's lives. When you intercede:

  • You partner with God's desire for all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
  • You engage in spiritual warfare against forces keeping people bound
  • You release God's power into situations that seem hopeless
  • You become a vessel through which God's love flows to others
  • You cooperate with the Holy Spirit's work of drawing people to Christ

The enemy knows the power of intercession, which is why he works overtime to keep believers from praying for others. He'd rather have you focused on yourself than standing in the gap for the lost and hurting.

Biblical Foundation for Intercession

Scripture clearly calls believers to intercede for others:

1 Timothy 2:1-4 - "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people... This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved."

Ezekiel 22:30 - "I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land... but I found no one."

James 5:16 - "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

Romans 8:26-27 - The Holy Spirit Himself intercedes for us according to God's will, and we're invited to join Him in this ministry of intercession.

Jesus Himself is our ultimate example of intercession - He "always lives to intercede" for us (Hebrews 7:25), and He taught us to pray for others, including our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

How to Pray Effective Intercessory Prayers

Effective intercession involves more than just mentioning names to God. Here's how to intercede with power:

Pray with faith and persistence. Jesus taught about persistent prayer in Luke 18:1-8. Don't give up when answers seem delayed - keep standing in the gap.

Use Scripture in your prayers. Pray God's Word over people's lives. Declare biblical promises and truths over those you're interceding for.

Engage in spiritual warfare. Recognize that intercession often involves warfare against spiritual forces keeping people bound (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, Ephesians 6:12).

Pray specifically. Instead of vague prayers, make specific requests for salvation, breakthrough, healing, or deliverance.

Listen to the Holy Spirit. Ask God how to pray for each person. The Spirit will guide you into effective intercession aligned with God's will.

Pray with authority. You have authority in Christ to bind and loose, to declare freedom, and to command strongholds to come down.

Keep a prayer list. Write down names of people you're interceding for and track how God answers. This builds your faith and keeps you consistent.

Fast when led. Sometimes intercession requires fasting to see breakthrough in difficult situations (Matthew 17:21).

Who Should You Intercede For?

Your intercession can cover many people and situations:

  • Unsaved family members and friends - Pray consistently for their salvation and for laborers to cross their paths with the gospel
  • Those in authority - Leaders, government officials, pastors, and those in positions of influence (1 Timothy 2:2)
  • The sick and suffering - Pray for healing, comfort, and God's presence in their pain
  • Those in spiritual bondage - Intercede for freedom from addiction, sin patterns, and demonic oppression
  • Missionaries and ministers - Stand in the gap for those on the front lines of gospel work
  • Your local community - Pray for your city, schools, and neighbors
  • Nations and global concerns - Intercede for unreached people groups and world events

Overcoming Intercession Challenges

Many believers struggle with consistent intercession. Here are common challenges and solutions:

"I don't see results." Remember that intercession is often a long-term commitment. Abraham interceded, Moses interceded for years, and Jesus prayed for Peter knowing he would deny Him. Keep praying in faith even when you don't see immediate results.

"I don't know what to pray." The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes through us (Romans 8:26). Ask the Spirit to guide your prayers and pray Scripture over people's lives.

"I get discouraged." Focus on God's faithfulness, not circumstances. Keep a journal of answered prayers to encourage yourself during dry seasons.

"I don't have time." Start small - even 5 minutes daily of focused intercession is powerful. Pray while commuting, during lunch breaks, or before bed.

The Power of Agreement in Intercession

Jesus said, "If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven" (Matthew 18:19). There's multiplied power when believers agree together in intercession:

  • Find prayer partners who will stand in the gap with you
  • Join or start an intercession group at your church
  • Participate in corporate prayer meetings
  • Share specific prayer requests with trusted believers

Begin Your Intercession Journey

Start today by making a list of people who need your intercession. Commit to praying for them consistently - daily if possible. Use these intercessory prayers as a guide, personalizing them for your specific situations.

Remember: Your prayers matter. That family member you're praying for? Those prayers are creating spiritual openings. That friend who seems far from God? Your intercession is weakening strongholds. That impossible situation? God is moving in response to your faithful prayers.

Don't underestimate the power of standing in the gap.

Someone stood in the gap for you. Now it's your turn to stand for others.
