Prayer for Gods Plan in Your Life

0:57 min prayer

Discover God's purpose for your life through prayer. Ask Him to reveal passions, dreams, and how your experiences prepared you for His calling.

If you have ever wondered what God actually made you for, this is a prayer for that. It's a prayer to discover God's purpose for your life, asking Him to reveal the passions, gifts, and experiences He's been using to prepare you for the works He planned. Scripture says you are God's workmanship, created for good works He prepared in advance, so your purpose is not random, and it is not hidden from you. Pray this when you are seeking clarity about your calling and you want to uncover what God designed you to do, rather than just chase what looks impressive.

A Word Before You Pray

Before you pray this, take the pressure off. A lot of people approach purpose like there's one secret assignment out there and they're terrified of missing it. That's not how Scripture talks about it. Your deepest purpose, the one that comes before any job title or role, is to know God and love the people in front of you. Everything else grows out of that.

So this prayer is really an invitation to pay attention. Notice how it asks God to reveal the passions He planted and the experiences He's used to shape you. Those are not throwaway details. Your gifts and the things that stir you are clues, breadcrumbs God left in how He made you. You are not a cosmic accident. You are, as one translation of Ephesians puts it, God's poem, and a poem is written on purpose.

And give yourself room for it to unfold. Purpose usually clarifies as you move, not before you move. So pray honestly, then be willing to take the next faithful step even when you cannot see the whole picture yet.

The Prayer

Here is a prayer for anyone seeking God's plan for their life. Let's pray.

Father, I ask You to reveal the passions and dreams that You planted within my heart. Lord, show me how I'm naturally equipped to serve others and bring You glory. Help me to see how You've been preparing me, through every experience of my life, for the works You planned for me to do.

God, reveal how the desires You placed in me can grow into the purpose You have for my life, so I can make a difference for Your kingdom. Lord, lead me to take steps that bring clarity about what You're calling me to, so I can walk in it fully, for Your glory.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

How to Use This Prayer

Pray it, then do something with it, because purpose rarely shows up while you sit still waiting for a lightning bolt. Take an honest inventory: What are you good at? What stirs you? What needs do you notice that others walk past? Write down a handful of things you love doing that also serve people, and bring that list back to God. Those are often where He's pointing.

Say yes to the last thing God made clear, and the next step usually opens once you move. Serve where you already are, ask the people who know you what they see in you, and weigh what surfaces against Scripture. Be patient, since clarity tends to come in stages. Pair this with Ephesians 2:10 or Psalm 139, and keep your eyes on knowing God, not just landing a calling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find God's purpose for my life?

Start with how God made you, since your gifts, passions, and even your past experiences are clues, not accidents. Pay attention to what you are drawn to and what needs you notice, ask Him for wisdom, and serve where you already are. Purpose tends to unfold as you take the next faithful step, not all at once.

What does Ephesians 2:10 mean about being God's "workmanship"?

Ephesians 2:10 says you are God's workmanship, created for good works He prepared in advance. The Greek word for workmanship is poiema, the root of our word poem, so you are closer to a piece of art than a random accident. It means your purpose is intentional, woven into how He made you, and tied to walking closely with Him.

Are my passions and desires part of God's calling?

They can be, though not automatically. Psalm 37:4 says as you delight in God, He gives you the desires of your heart, which means He also shapes those desires over time. A passion that keeps pulling you toward serving others and honoring Him is worth noticing. Still, test your desires against Scripture rather than assuming every want is a calling.

What if I still don't know my purpose?

Not knowing yet is not failure, and you have not missed some secret window. Purpose usually unfolds gradually, and Scripture says your deepest calling is simply to know God and love people right where you are. Be faithful in today's small things, since clarity often comes through movement. Your worth was never riding on having it all figured out.

How to Hear God

How to Hear God: He Still Speaks is a blueprint for assisting people who want to get in tune with the voice of God. God has not changed and wants to communicate with us as He did with Adam in the garden of Eden. The direction our lives have taken is a direct result of the voices we have chosen to follow. It would make sense to follow the voice of God who knows the best plan and directions for our journey on earth. The question is simply, If God had some information that could change your life for the better, would you want it? If God had answers to questions, you needed answered, would you want it. Well, guess what He does! The real question for all of us, is have we taken the time to build the requisite relationship that fosters the answers to our questions. This book will be a great tool in building a more meaningful relationship with God. We were created with two ears and one mouth, so we should spend more time listening than talking.
